The Silence of Small Towns

the pin-drop elementary school silence

of fear

of waiting

this town holding its breath.

the smallest pitter-patter of raindrops and the fear of god;

golden-orange evenings

the coal mine just a grave

of the dead for the living.

the darkness of silence;

visions of lives lived and unlived

peel off the skin bit by bit

into the dark silent well of the night.

the whole town could fold like a lawn chair

just the sharp piercing temporary pain

of getting your finger stuck in it

pin-drop elementary-school

small-town silence.
